💡 The real power of Notion is…
I’m not bragging here, but I first started using Notion back in 2017, building dashboards for clients to see project progress. Then, later using it to plan my curriculum teaching high school design classes. And lately, to manage Notion build projects for clients (yes, very meta).
It’s safe to say Notion has changed a little bit since then 2017.
This got me thinking: There have been tons of new productivity tools and tech that have merit and genuinely exciting features. I’ve been using Notion for almost six years now, and SO much has changed since then. So, why continue to use it?
As I started prepping for a talk I’m giving at our upcoming Miami Meetup, my first thought was to focus on databases; how powerful they can be, why people get freaked out about them, and how to ‘think in databases’ to level up productivity.
But, it’s actually not about databases at all…it’s about automation.
More and more, Notion’s updates have removed friction between users and automations.
First it was creating templates within databases…
Then buttons…
And now full blown, in-app automations.
The ability to map out projects with insane detail is a superpower.
For example, you can
create a project type
include a set of tasks
assign tasks to team members
define order tasks should be completed
add context to help execute each task.
In one click.
This workflow relies heavily on databases of course, but it’s amazing how much Notion has progressed, building out hugely time-saving features, while barely disrupting the user experience.
And if you’ve been following Notion influencers lately, you’ve probably noticed the massive revamp of how formulas work. This is bound to have a big impact on how users can aggregate and work with data from existing properties. There is definitely a learning curve, but I think Formulas 2.0 marks a big shift in the product, paving the way for more powerful databases.
Expect a deep dive on Formulas 2.0 in our next newsletter!
I’m also curious: why do you use Notion? Send me a reply or drop a comment in Substack!
👋🏼 Hello from Notion’s NYC office!
Back when I first started making content and doing freelance workspace builds, I remember imagining what it would be like to hang out at Notion’s office.
I can finally check it off my bucket list. We got to grab lunch, hang out in the library, chat with people on the product team, and check out the amazing rooftop.
Special shout outs to Francisco and Tem, can’t wait to meet up again soon!
What a time. 🖤

⚒️ Why Finta is my new favorite budgeting Tool
As you’ll probably assume, I use Notion for almost everything. But managing finances and transactions has always felt clunky. The closest I got was creating a Zapier automation between YNAB (You Need a Budget) and Notion, but it didn’t work for all my accounts.
When my fellow Notion Ambassador Alex posted about Finta, I figured I’d give it a try.
I’m not exaggerating:
Finta syncs literally every account, transaction, and bank into a clean set of Notion databases, and it looks beautiful.
I had to tweet out my excitement minutes after getting it set up.
I already cancelled YNAB and may not need Quickbooks if this works long term.
Fun fact: I messaged Taylor, who’s the founder and let her know how awesome the app was, and she was gracious enough to offer 10% off to anybody who signed up. So if you’re interested, use promo code NOTIONCOACH to get the discount!
🌟 Gallery View gets a glow up 🌟
Ever since I watched some of Marie Poulin’s early YouTube videos on building a journal in Notion, I wished there was a way to wrap text and properties in gallery view.
‘Wrapping’ is possible in, for example, table views, where text and other information moves to a new line, ensuring information doesn’t get cut off.
Super excited about this update, but this will of course mean updating the latest version of Manifest OS! 😅
